Parker Points!!!

Cazas Novas had some good reviews from Robert Parker:

Cazas Novas Avesso 2015 – 90 Points

The 2015 Avesso comes in with four grams of residual sugar, 7.7 of acidity and 12.5% alcohol. The acidity laces through the sugar and mingles beautifully with the fruit, making this finish dry and fresh. Quite a beauty, this has caressing texture, good concentration and beautiful fruit. As always, I wonder with this grape how well it will age, but this shows well enough to make me want to lean up and out a little. It's another terrific value. I think this counts as my favorite wine yet here, but when the Reserva comes out (whatever name it eventually has), that should eclipse it.

One of the "Young Projects" group members, according to its PR, this winery is in "the most inland and warmest part of Vinho Verde, just before you enter the Baixo Corgo of the Douro. Located in Santa Marinha do Zezere, the Quinta de Guimarães is home to a relatively new project, Cazas Novas." The sub-region is Baião, where Avesso is the signature grape.

It is jointly owned by Vasco Magalhães (who handles sales and marketing), Diogo Lopes (winemaking) and Carlos Coutinho (Owner of the estate, Quinta de Guimarães). The winemakers are Diogo Lopes and Anselmo Mendes and vinification occurs at Anselmo's winery. The first vintage was 2008, but Diogo and Vasco did not join in until 2011. Note that the legal name of the company is Verde Pompa, but they prefer to market under Cazas Novas, so that is how they are listed.

Cazas Novas Escolha 2015 – 90 Points

The 2015 Branco Escolha is an unoaked blend of 70% Avesso and 30% Loureiro. It comes in with 12% alcohol and roughly five grams per liter of residual sugar, but it balances the sugar well with the wine's freshness. Gloriously expressive, this lovely blend is relatively light, but it is persistent and laces the flavor into the palate. It dances easily across the tongue and seems lively all the while, finishing dry. This is very nicely done and a super value.
